The Ultimate Event Space Is Here

When the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) opened in Hobart in January 2011 the Tasmanian conference industry was able to offer a completely different conference destination

Not only did MONA change perceptions of the island state, its arrival has meant that its home, the former Moorilla Estate, has changed its name - to MONA.

The 9 hectare site, including a 3.5 hectare vineyard, is just 15 minutes drive from central Hobart or a 45 minute MONA fast catamaran ride. It now offers the Ether Building Function Centre, Moorilla winery and cellar door, Wine Bar, the Moo Brew microbrewery, The Source Restaurant, eight contemporary pavilions and, of course, Australia’s largest private gallery, the Museum of Old and New Art.

Conference Facilities

MONA offers two purpose-built function rooms, and a cinema.

Eros and Thanatos within the Ether Building are two north-facing, ground floor rooms separated by an articulated soundproof wall; seating for up to 100 people individually, or 300 combined. Contemporary audio-visual equipment and touch screen controlled projectors, microphones and iPod docks allow for easy communication to large audiences.

In the lowest level of the Museum is a 63 leather-seated cinema with an eight-metre screen, electronically-controlled curtains, surround-sound and touch-panel controls.

Catering

Food prepared on site by head chef Philippe Leban and his team, using seasonal local ingredients.

Receptions

The Void (465 square metres) includes a 240-million-year-old, 12 metre high, sandstone wall, a full cocktail bar, and a waterfall artwork, bit.fall (Julius Popp, 2006 to 2007). Entry is by spiral staircase or a cylindrical glass lift to take guests 14 metres underground. The space can cater for up to 450 people and is wheelchair accessible. It offers a unique way to entertain guests and includes some major pieces from David Walsh's collection.

We also offer the Nolan Gallery (498 square metres), home to the 46-metre-long and nine-metre-high Sidney Nolan masterpiece, Snake; or the Western Reception space (262 square metres), with its restored Victorian pipe organ (1847), a balcony and views of the River Derwent.

Smaller functions can be held in the Barrel Room, Wine Bar (113 square metres), Private Tasting Room and The Source Restaurant.

Accommodation

The MONA Pavilions: eight unique pavilions (four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom) named after influential Australian architects and artists. Each self-contained pavilion has its own individual style, and houses original artworks and antiquities along with furniture by some of the world's leading designers.
