Business Events Tasmania - State Government Submission 2012-13
07-Feb-2012 | Business Events Tasmania calls on the State Government to honour a 2010 pre-election pledge of $300,000 per annum over four years - commencing from the 2012-13 financial year.
The business case put to government in the lead-up to the last election was supported on the basis that business growth is the best means to build the Tasmanian economy and create jobs. The proposition was for an increase in the existing base funding of $540,000 per annum the organisation receives via Tourism Tasmania to allow the state to compete more aggressively on a national and international stage and grow the sector’s benefit to the Tasmanian economy.The promised funding has not been forth coming. Whilst the leisure visitors to Tasmania have declined, business events have continued to build momentum despite limited resources, a challenging environment and highly competitive market place. Without appropriate resources, Business Events Tasmania cannot effectively market the destination placing in jeopardy the past investment and current industry successes.
Business Events Tasmania seeks an additional $300,000 pa over four years from the government, commencing in the 2012-13 financial year. The additional funding will be utilised to deliver essential sales and marketing activities to increase Tasmania’s share of the high value business events sector.
With increased funding and resources Business Events Tasmania conservatively estimates it will secure an extra 10 conferences at $500,000 per event and 5 smaller conferences at $300,000 per events, also creating regional dispersal and in total generating an extra $6.5 million per annum for the Tasmanian economy.
