Delegate Expenditure and Satisfaction Research December 2011

07-Feb-2012 | Ninety percent of visiting conference delegates are impressed by the friendliness of the Tasmanian people and are staying longer in the state.

Business event visitors are also spending more than ever before, Business Events Tasmania’s Delegate Survey results reveal that 86% of delegates are totally satisfied with the standards of Tasmanian service and following closely in satisfaction levels are food and wine, business event organisation, restaurants and business event facilities.

Nearly all delegates surveyed (95%) would recommend the state to others and most plan to return for a holiday within the next three years.

The purpose of the research was to gather information about the direct contribution that convention delegates travelling the state make to the Tasmanian economy and their level of satisfaction as a business events destination.

Respondents undertook the online questionnaire in the week after the conclusion of the business event.

The key objectives of the research were to gather information about:

  • Length of stay in Tasmania
  • Travel Behaviour
  • Spending patterns
  • Level of Satisfaction with the Business Trip to Tasmania

The results indicated that:

  • The average length of stay in Tasmania is 5.56 days compared to 4.6 days in 2007. This is composed if an average 4.51 days in the host city plus 1.05 days which is the average number of days the delegate spent in other areas of Tasmania.
  • The average daily expenditure of delegates (excluding Tasmanians) in Tasmania is $535.30 compared to $439.50 in 2007. Daily expenditure includes pre and post touring, accommodation, meals, transportation, business social functions, shopping etc. The average expenditure of a delegate in Tasmania is $2, 976.29.

The areas of satisfaction with Tasmania rated by delegates were:

  • 90% the friendliness of the Tasmanian people
  • 86% the standard of service 
  • 84% the food and wine
  • 83% business event organisation
  • 83% restaurants
  • 81% business event facilities

Areas of lowest satisfaction were:

  • Shopping trading hours (55%)
  • Shopping (60%)
  • Air services to Tasmanian (65%)

Nearly all delegates surveyed (95%) said they would recommend the destination and most plan to return for a holiday within three years.

Also, the Tasmania Visitor Survey as at 30 June 2011 indicated that 33,800 delegates (an increase of 13% over 2009-10) attended conferences/business events in the 2010-11 financial year.

The worth of the business events industry is estimated to be over $100 million when reviewing both the EMRS research and the Tasmanian Visitor Survey (June 2011). Importantly, business events deliver visitation and high yield expenditure during the shoulder seasons and low season.
